Ambrose Crowley

D.O.B: 1718 D.O.D: 1754

Neither Ambrose Crowley (1718-1754), a scion of the ironmaking family, nor any family member, appears in the TASTDB, but the will of Robert Clarke master of the Crowley pink (which made 8 slaving voyages from London between 1730 and 1738, and is given as the Crawley in TASTDB) identifies Ambrose Crowley as his master in 1741. Ambrose Crowley himself was too young (he came of age in 1739) to have been the owner of the slaving voyages, which must therefore have been owned by the firm run by his mother Theodosia, whom he predeceased. Theodosia Crowley (q.v.) is already well-known for her entrepreneurship, and as a supplier of iron goods including chains and manacles to the slave-trade.
