Edward Carleton

D.O.B: D.O.D: 1732

Edward Carleton, London merchant and ship-owner (d. c. 1724). Edward Carleton does not appear in TASTDB but he was party (with among other Arden Carleton, probably his son) to the Chancery suit of Carleton v Brewer in 1710, concerning a voyage by the Macclesfield, identifiable as voyage no. 15190 (which gives the ship as ‘Macklesfield’ and the owners as Anthony Forty and William Ambrose).  Edward Carleton had been part-owner of a ship of the same name in 1698 when it was granted letters of marque. Edward Carleton lost control of his estate at Carshalton in 1715 when it was seized to secure debts owed to the Crown by Edward and Arden Carleton. Edward Carleton was described as ‘bankrupt’ in litigation against the East India Co. in 1724. He was probably the man buried at All Saints Carshalton in 1732.
