James Mather of New Orleans

D.O.B: D.O.D: 1821

James Mather (c. 1750-1821), originally of London but moving to the American colonies c. 1777 and becoming Mayor of New Orleans 1807-1812. ‘Js Mather’ had six slaving voyages from London as sole owner between 1774 and 1776, all to Saint Louis, three of which were destined for the southern American colonies and three to different islands in the British Caribbean (and three of which were by the Beggar’s Bennison).  James Mather was granted administration in London of the will of Stephen Johnson, master of the Beggar’s Bennison, on 02/11/1776 as attorney of Ann Bell widow, the mother and universal legatee, consistent with the biographical detail that James Mather left England for Louisiana in 1776 or 1777.
