Touchet's early trade focused on the import of raw cotton and linen yarn but quickly diversified into an array of commercial interests across the Atlantic and Europe. These included textiles, but also shipping, insurance, speculation in naval prizes, and the sugar and slave trades. He was also involved in schemes to monopolise the trade to Labrador in 1749, Senegal in 1756 - including his half-share in an expedition to capture Fort St Louis, and the mineral rights of Lake Superior in Canada in 1772 - a project for which he was appointed deputy governor.
