P_10433_0361 – Joseph Martyn of Love Lane

D.O.B: D.O.D: 1718

Joseph Martin appears as co-owner of 26 slaving voyages from London and one from Plymouth between 1698 and 1710 (four other slaving voyages from Bristol are also shown with Joseph Martin as co-owner in the same period), many of the London voyages co-owned with Thomas Merrett or Merritt (q.v.). Joseph Martin was one of Zahedieh’s 59 largest colonial merchants, and Joseph Martyn was one of Pettigrew’s elite separate traders. While some secondary sources identify Joseph Martin the slave-trader with the MP and Baltic merchant Sir Joseph Martin (1649-1729), and it is conceivable some of the voyages were those of the MP, the bulk and probably all were in fact those of Joseph Martyn merchant of Love Lane, whose will was proved in 1718, and who acted as agent for Nevis.  He left £30,000 to his daughter Mary Fellowes in his will.
