P_10433_0361 – Joseph Martyn of Love Lane
Born: Unknown
Died: 1718

Joseph Martin appears as co-owner of 26 slaving voyages from London and one from Plymouth between 1698 and 1710 (four other slaving voyages from Bristol are also shown with Joseph Martin as co-owner in the same period), many of the London voyages co-owned with Thomas Merrett or Merritt (q.v.). Joseph Martin was one of Zahedieh’s 59 largest colonial merchants, and Joseph Martyn was one of Pettigrew’s elite separate traders. While some secondary sources identify Joseph Martin the slave-trader with the MP and Baltic merchant Sir Joseph Martin (1649-1729), and it is conceivable some of the voyages were those of the MP, the bulk and probably all were in fact those of Joseph Martyn merchant of Love Lane, whose will was proved in 1718, and who acted as agent for Nevis. He left £30,000 to his daughter Mary Fellowes in his will.

Sources: Joseph Martin was one of Zahedieh's 59 largest colonial merchants, Capital and Colonies p. 63 (and 65). Joseph Martyn was one of Pettigrew's elite separate traders, Freedom's Debt p. 78. Tattersfield, The Forgotten Trade p. 300; Zahedieh, Capital and Colonies p. 65. Pettigrew p. 68 gives him as Joseph Martyn of Love Lane. J.M. Price also clearly distinguished between the two men, Price, Jacob M. “The Tobacco Adventure to Russia: Enterprise, Politics, and Diplomacy in the Quest for a Northern Market for English Colonial Tobacco, 1676-1722.” Transactions of the American Philosophical Society 51, no. 1 (1961): 1–120. https://doi.org/10.2307/1005870, p. 108. The Joseph Martin shown as captain as well as owner for the slaving voyage of the William to the Gold Coast and Antigua in 1702 (voyage no. 15117) is unlikely to have been either Sir Joseph Martin MP or Joseph Martyn merchant. https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1690-1715/member/martin-joseph-1649-1729. C 11/2572/44; C 10/383/41 HCA 26/17/73 shows Joseph Martin [sic] as sole owner of the North Sound under Ralph Ash in 1702 (voyage no. 24290 in 1699 shows Joseph Martin, Thomas Merrett and Abraham Lodge as owners and Ralph Ash as captain; voyage no. 21133 in 1702 shows Roger Shuller, Micajah Perry, James Waite, Sir Jeffrey Jeffries and Joseph Martin as owners and Ralph Ash as captain ).
