Will of Anthony Tournay citizen and skinner of London made 13/02/1722. He opened the will by declaring that he had advanced all his children to his satisfaction [and therefore was free to dispose his personalty as he saw fit]. He left his son John 'for his extraordinary care and pains in keeping my books and managing my other affaires for any years past' £2000 over and above what he had already provided him, together with his 'carriage and machine'; and he left his son Edward £1000 similarly for his care and pains. He left £100 each to the children of his daughter Jane, wife of Barwell Smith, of his daughter Katherine wife of Stephen Jenkins and of his daughter Duglass [sic] wife of James Sandwell; and £200 each to the children of his daughter Deborah, wife of Nathaniel Bateman, and £200 to Deborah Bateman herself [without further explanation]. He made a series of philanthropic bequests: £100 to the Governors of Christs Hospital; £100 to Bridewell and Bethlem; £80 to St Thomas' Hospital, to whom he had already given £20; £50 to the poor children of Dowgate; £20 to the Skinners to meet the cost of their next visitation to the free school at Tunbridge. After other minor monetary legacies to servants and friends, he left his residuary estate among his six children.
