Co-owner with established independent slave-traders of a slaving voyage from London by the Fanteen Galley in 1709 to Africa and Jamaica. Also an owner of at least one slaving voyage from Bristol. One of Pettigrew’s elite separate traders. John Goodwin, a London tobacco importer and former partner of Jonathan Matthew (d. 1705, q.v.) was bankrupt in 1711, and brought down other importers, according to Price & Clemens.
