P_10433_0673 – Laurence Galdy
Born: Unknown
Died: Unknown

London West India merchant and slave-trader, in partnership with his brother Lewis Galdy in Jamaica. Co-owner of six slaving voyages from London between 1700 and 1705, to Cabinda, Gold Coast and unspecified African ports, all but one destined for Jamaica. In his will, translated from French, Laurence Galdy urged his wife not to insist on 1/3rd of his estate (as was her right under their marriage settlement) because of the complexity of his partnership affairs with his brother, but instead to ‘retake’ from his estate the £2920 for her portion that he had put into the partnership.

Will of Lawrence Galdy of London merchant made 19/03/1716. He said he wished to be buried in the church of St Peters Le Poor [sic] 'between the pulpit and the table of the communion.' He had he said received for the portion and rights of his wife Susanna three sums amounting to £2920 'which said whole sum was brought into the Trade in co-partnership between me and my brother Lewis Galdy in Jamaica.' His wife was entitled either to retake the £2920 or to have 1/3rd of Laurence Galdy's estate after his death, and he urged her given the difficulty of a liquidation of his estate or effects 'which are joynted with those of my said brother' to take back the £2920. He left his residual estate to his daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Susanna and Jane at 21 or at marriage. He asked the this debt from John Sabatier not be collected for 4 years after his death, and expressed regret that 'I am not in a condition of making a gift thereof' to Sabatier.
