The will of Benjamin Hatley Citizen and Grocer, made and proved in 1723 identified his son-in-law as George Nelthorpe (q.v.) – a co-owner in two of Hatley’s voyages – and showed Virginia/tobacco connections.

Will of Benjamin Hatley Citizen and Grocer of London made 23/10/1723. He explained that he was a widower and had only one [surviving] child Mary, who had married Francis Foot[e] without his permission; bound by custom, however, he left her 1/2 his estate. From the other half of his estate he made several monetary bequests, including £2000 for his grand-daughter Mary Foot[e]. He also left land at Maidstone in trust for her. He instructed that his ship the Hatley should make two voyages to Virginia and then his share be sold; his partner or agent appeared to be Nathaniel Smith (q.v.).
