London merchant (d. c. 1718), co-owner of two voyages from London to the Gold Coast and Jamaica in 1702-1703 (and possibly of a third in 1704, now identified only with Anthony Tourney in TASTDB). The will of William Gardiner of Sawbridgeworth shows his son-in-law as Edward Searle (q.v.), the major London slave-trader who was co-investor in William Gardiner’s two voyages. William Gardiner of London purchased the estate of Pishiobury in Hertfordshire c. 1702.

Defendants: Elizabeth Gardiner and Sarah Gardiner, spinsters, William Gardiner, esq, Ann Gardiner, Mary Gardiner, Edward Searle and Jane Gardiner. Date of bill (or first document): 1718 The case of Royal African Co. v Gardiner was presumably related to this man; C 5/327/2 Description: Short title: Royal African Company of England v Gardiner. The will of William Gardiner and the inscriptions to his first two wives were included in the investigation into the succession of the barony of Braye, 5 papers relating to claims to the barony of Braye By Parliament lords, proc, Will. iv. The case concerned whether Katherine Davies the widow of Edward Davies was the daughter of William Gardiner and his second wife, Catherine Vincent formerly Warren. The parties do not appear to have been aware of the [earlier?] marriage of Katherine the daughter of William Gardiner to John Duncombe c. 1718.

Will of William Gardiner of Pishiobury, Sawbridgeworth made 26/10/1715. His [third?] wife was to receive £1500 in lieu of dower and 'a year or two' living at Pishiobury without rent.He left £1500 each to six daughters Ann, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Sarah and Katherine on their marriages subject to the approbation of his son William and his son-in-law Edward Searle, failing which each would receive her 'orphanage' that he calculated at £700. He appointed his son William to the benefits of the Registers Office of the Archdeaconry of Middlesex, and left him Pishiobury.
