P_10433_1022 – James Painfelt
D.O.B:
D.O.D:
‘James Painfelt’ was shown as co-owner of a slaving voyage from London by the Donegal to Africa and Jamaica in 1700, alongside established London independent traders. No trace of the ‘Painfelt’ surname has yet been found, suggesting it was a mistranscription. Pamflet or Pamflett was an eastern Kent family. No James Pamflet of the right generation has been definitively traced (a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy of this name fl. c. 1700) but a Captain James Pamphlet [sic] was party to litigation in 1721 with William Codrington (q.v.) as co-defendant against Nathaniel Barnardiston (q.v.), while ‘Pamphlet’ was captain of a slaving voyage by the Margaret to Gold Coast and St Kitts, of the ownership of which nothing is currently known.
