P_10433_1214 – Silvanus Evans
Co-owner of a voyage by the Dartmouth Galley reportedly from London to Africa in 1709 in which the ship was captured by French privateers before it embarked any captive African people. Silvanus Evans was appointed to ‘assemble and supervise the landing of the cargo’ by John Harris of Exeter. Silvanus Evans appears to have been active as a merchant in Dartmouth in the early 1700s, and a man of that name was captain and part-owner of the privateer Sorlings with John Harris in 1712. No death-date nor will has yet been found for him.

Sources: Tattersfield, Forgotten Trade pp. 286-7, shows the voyage clearing Dartmouth, rather than London, and also shows James Doliffe (will proved 1747) of London as co-owner of Dartmouth Galley with John Harris (q.v.) of Exeter in 1711, when it was reconstituted as a privateer after the ship's return from its slaving voyage. E.g. ADM 106/615/86; HCA 26/16/70. PROB 11/415/449. Silvanus Evans of Pembrey, a Jamaican slave-holder who died c. 1770 was presumably connected but it is not yet known in what way, https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/person/view/2146666893.
