3.1 million enslaved people trafficked to the British colonies

‘Edwd Harle’ appears as co-owner with Bartholomew Gracedieu, Peter Beckford, Eben Gatton and others of a slaving voyage by the Beckford from London to Madagascar and the Caribbean in 1698. Despite the temptation to infer this to have been the MP Edward Harley, Edward Harle [sic] was party to Harle v Barkas in 1714, in which the defendant included Bartholomew Gracedieu and Eleanor Gatton.  No will has been found for him. Captain Edward Harle Citizen and Apothecary of London was the executor of his brother John Harle mariner of South Shields at present bound for Virginia in the latter’s will made in 1691 and proved in 1696. An Edward Harle was buried at St Sepulchre in the City 20/05/1715.
