Captain-owner of three voyages from London between 1734 and 1738, captain in a fourth in 1736, and captain in a further voyage from Barbados in 1733: in the latter two, for which TASTDB gives no ownership information, John Boys probably had an ownership interest. Sources: John Boys and Bartholomew Stibbs mariner were defendants in a suit brought by Samuel Wragg (q.v.) and John Bird in 1726, C 11/1812/30. Stibbs had captained voyage 76499 in 1717 from London in the Resolution (no owners given) and (given as Stubbs) voyage 76108 for Wragg. John Boys was plaintiff in a suit against Ephraim Miller, Benjamin Weale (q.v.) and John Pierce [sic], C 11/1887/20 in 1744. In 1747 John Boys of Sierra Leone described the Glasgow snow master William Gould as his, ADM 106/1040/159. This was voyage 27178 shown as originating in Plymouth with no ownership info. in TASTDB. ADM 106/1072/203 makes it clear that the owner was in fact Mr Fryer, consistent with 27135 (George Fryer, q.v.). John Boys was thus apparently acting as agent or merchant on the African coast. In 1754, he was party to litigation that again appears slave-trade related, C 11/1676/32 Description: Short title: Wilson v Boys. Document type: Bill and answer. Plaintiffs: Richard Wilson, gunmaker of London and others (creditors of John Norie and William Cleveland). Defendants: John Boys, Benjamin Ball, Richard Maitland and George Barclay. Date of bill (or first document): 1754.
