P_10433_1378 – Thomas Hebert
Born: Unknown
Died: Unknown

‘Thomas Herbert’ is shown in TASTDB as captain in eight slaving voyages (six known to have been from London) between 1715 and 1730 and a man of the same name is given as an owner and co-owner of five slaving voyages from London between 1732 and 1737. The slave-trade captain was certainly in fact Thomas Hebert, and we have tentatively concluded that the slave-voyage owner was the same man, active as a merchant in London in the 1740s and dying in London c. 1754.

Sources: Herbert [sic] v Morice of 1720 C 11/1990/25, but cf also Thomas Hebert in litigation v Richard Harris, Francis Melmoth and Humphry Morris [sic] in 1719 C 11/1988/32 and in Barnard v Joyce 1748 C 11/179/3. Thomas Herbert MP (1695-1739) was a kinsman of Humphry Morice: it was clearly not this man who was a Captain, and there is no evidence that he was the owner of the 1730s. Thomas Hebert was a signatory of a petition of merchants trading to South Carolina in February 1737, https://www.british-history.ac.uk/cal-state-papers/colonial/america-west-indies/vol43/pp21-40. C 11/1077/8 Description: Short title: Bread v Hebert. Document type: Answer only. Plaintiffs: James Bread. Defendants: Thomas Hebert, merchant and others. Date of bill (or first document): 1744.
