John French was the co-owner alongside the South Sea Company and others of a slaving voyage from London by the Beckford to Whydah/Ouidah in 1726. He has not yet been traced further. A John French was captain of a voyage by the Mary and Catherine from Africa to Montserrat in 1727 (as ‘French’) and of two voyages from London, by the Guinea Hen to the Gold Coast and Antigua in 1728 and by the Greyhound the following year with no known destination, for all of which no ownership information is known. The will of John French Commander of the good ship or vessel Greyhound now bound for Africa was made 02/05/1729 and witnessed at Gravesend: he left his universal estate to his wife and sole executrix Susanna French, failing whom to his threes sisters Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.
