He was probably John Carruthers of Brecansyde ‘shipmaster of London’. In turn the will of this man was probably that of John Carruthers of Bromley St Leonard proved in 1770, which mentions a bond from George Muir W.S. who was associated with the financial affairs of Brecansyde.
