This Edward Bridgen was dead by 1734 C 11/682/24. Edward Bridgen the son of William Bridgen of Bridgnorth was apprenticed 29/11/1693 to Humphrey Bellamy, Citizen and Cutler, Ancestry.com, London, England, Freedom of the City Admission Papers, 1681-1930 for William Bridgen 1700-1720 1701 May - Dec. Edward Bridgen was involved as an unsuccessful candidate in a contested election for Alderman of the ward of Lime Street in 1724, A True and exact List of the ... Lords ... and Commons of Great Britain ...(1727) p. 72. The Edward Bridgen merchant of London whose will was proved 08/08/1787 was the son of the North Carolina slave-owner Samuel Bridgen and son-in-law of the novelist Samuel Richardson, and was the nephew of the earlier Edward Bridgen. The 1787 will shows connections to Shropshire for the younger Edward Bridgen. He left monetary legacies totalling c. £900 to his brothers and nephews and nieces, including £100 to his brother Rev. John Bridgen to take his Doctor of Divinity degree; £500 to his friend Captain Samuel Webster of the ship Bridgen; and £100 to have 25 poor children of Bridgnorth apprentices to some trade. He made his brother Rev. John Bridgen his residuary legatee.
