Slave-ship captain and slave-trading merchant, killed in resistance by captive African people on board the Lucy in 1801. Owner-captain of a slaving voyage from London by the Eliza to the Windward Coast and Savannah in 1789, co-owner with his partners Robert Heatley and Thomas Sharples[s] of London of two slaving voyages from London by the Lively (the first to the Gambia and St Eustatius in 1792 and then a voyage of 1794 in which the ship was captured before the captive African people were disembarked), captain of further three slaving voyages from London for different owners between 1779 and 1796, and captain in two later slaving voyages from Liverpool. He made his will of Liverpool in 1801, when he was about to depart on his voyage in the Lucy: the will suggested that he was a native of Scotland.

Will of John Olderman of Liverpool mariner and now master of the ship Lucy on her intended voyage to the coast of Africa made 23/04/1801. He left his the income from his estate to his wife Ann Olderman subject to an annuity of £20 p.a. to his sister Elizabeth Olderman of Arbroath (or £10 p.a. should Olderman have any children born by his present wife) and to a legacy of £100 to Miss Johnson, daughter of Robert Johnson merchant of Liverpool: he made the latter his co-executor with his wife. In codicil of 24/04/1801 he left occupation of his house at Arbroath to his sister for life.
