P_10433_1729 – James Buchanan
London West India and Virginia merchant. James Buchanan was shown as the owner of three slave voyages between 1736 and 1753, the last with Henry Bonham as captain-owner. The will of James Buchanan shows him as partner of Richard Lancaster and John Hyndman. No internal evidence in the will connects the testator to the slave-trader, but while the first voyage was to Martinique (and might not be the same man), the second and third were to Charleston and Patuxent, consistent with Virginia business of James Buchanan & Co.

In the will of James Buchanan merchant made 14/12/175, he left £100 for mourning to each of his two trustees, George Napier of London and John Gay of Ampthill, £50 for mourning to William Anderson of London, and £20 each for mourning to John Hyndman and Richard Lancaster, later in the will identified as James Buchanan's partners. He left his household goods and 1/3rd of his residuary estate to his wife Jane in lieu of the bond in their marriage settlement; 1/3rd to his son Archibald Buchanan; and 1/3rd between his daughters Jane and Rebeckah. He left the unexpired term of his co-partnership with Hyndman and Lancaster to his son Archibald, to be valued at £6000 in calculating the latter's 1/3rd share of the estate, and authorised his trustees to lend up to £3000 to the partnership.
