Born: 30/01/1740
Died: 10/01/1802

London North American merchant and major slave-trader, and Secretary of the Committee of Merchants trading to Africa. He had a cluster of 22 recorded slave voyages from London between 1769 and 1778, mostly as sole owner, two further voyages from Boston in 1774-1775 and one from St Kitts in 1774, and an earlier voyage from Liverpool in 1766, as well as four further probable voyages we have attributed to him Two later voyages 1799-1801 were possibly owned by his son rather than John Shoolbred sen.

His birth-date is taken from his will, and his death-date is taken from https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/210538479/john-shoolbred [accessed 14/03/2022]. PROB 11/1369/83. TNA B 3/4472 and 4473 Description: In the matter of John Shoolbred and William Williams of Mark Lane, London, merchants (dealers and chapmen), bankrupts. Volume 1 and Volume 2, Date of commission of bankruptcy: 1806 December 9; London Gazette 16457 19 February 1811 p. 349. PROB 11/1369/83; the will of John Shoolbred of Cape Henry Haiti partner in Bain and Shoolbred proved 31/10/1820 was probably the son of the London slave-trader. Voyages nos. 78053 (in 1772) and 75565 (in 1774) in the Grace, both captained by Alexander Curry or Currie, to Bonny and then St Vincent and Jamaica respectively, also almost certainly belonged to John Shoolbred [the elder], who appears as owner in Lloyd's Register 1776. Two slaving voyages from London by the New Britannia (no. 75932 in 1771; no. 78101 in 1772) for which no ownership information is given in TASTDB were also almost certainly those of John Shoolbred sen. The second of these culminated in a rising in January 1773 by the enslaved Africans who blew up the ship killing almost all onboard, Rediker The Slave Ship p. 290. All four have been added to Shoolbred's voyages in this entry.

Will of John Shoolbred of Mark Lane City of London proved 23/01/1802. The detailed and expressive will deals inter alia with: his partnership with William Williams, in which he left £15,000 capital for at least a year after his death; his 10,000 acres of land in Canada; and his desire to have Williams succeed him as secretary of the Committee of Merchants trading to Africa. He instructed that he be buried at the Chapel on Tottenham Court Road founded by George Whitefield [now the American Church]. He recorded the deaths of his daughter Mrs Weuves (the wife of Jerome Weuves) and of his son Thomas Shoolbred in India.
