James Debatt (fl. 1766-1769), co-owner with Daniel Vialars (q.v.) of voyage by the Lord Ligonier from London to Gambia and Annapolis in 1766. The ship Lord Ligonier features in Alex Haley’s Roots, and material related to Roots suggests Debatt was Governor of Fort James at Accra, Ghana c. 1766. Lt. Gov. Debatt was in place in Senegal and Senegambia in 1768-1769. A James Debatt was buried in Westminster 1783.
