P_10433_1874 – James Mill
Born: 1738
Died: 1806

Co-owner of eight slaving voyages from London between 1765 and 1775, seven with Gilbert Ross (q.v.). James Mill was the brother of Hercules Mill (q.v.) and of David Mill the Governor of Cape Coast Castle. The men were the sons of James Mill laird of Dysart and Lauriston. James Mill the slave-trader was later partner in Mill, Ross and Burgie at 9 Billiter Lane, which appears to have traded with the East Indies and North America. He accumulated wealth, leaving monetary legacies of over £20,000 and a landed estate at Crofton, Titchfield in Hampshire.
