P_10433_1909 – Arthur Bold
Owner-captain in the slave trade, with one voyage from London in the Sophia probably as owner-captain in 1776 (where the owner is given only as Bold), and three in the John (one from London, two from Liverpool) as captain with an ownership interest in 1772-74 (alongside Jonas Bold, the future Mayor of Liverpool, among others). Three further voyages (two from London and one from Liverpool), including one in 1788, show Arthur Bold as captain with no reported ownership. Separately, four voyages from Liverpool between 1740 and 1746 show Arthur Bold as captain. It is unlikely that a career as captain could span almost 50 years, and DBS has concluded that there were at least two men of the same name.
