Co-owner alongside Richard Oswald (q.v.) among others of a slaving voyage from London by the Saint Paul to Gambia and Hampton in 1752. Probably David Gavin of Langton, a Glasgow merchant, who died in 1773. No will has been found for him to date. The will of his widow Lady Elizabeth Gavin was proved 1827.

During the years 1755-1766 the major commodities with which he dealt were tea, wine and spirits and fine cloth such as lawn and cambric as well as British linen. In 1758, David Gavin bought the estate of Langton in Berwickshire, Scotland (now part of Borders, Scotland) from Sir Alexander Cockburn. His grandson was John, second Marquis of Breadalbane.' David Gavin's death at Langton 28/03/1773 is shown in The Scots Magazine Vol. XXXV August 1773 p. 447. The voyage has reportedly records, The accounts of ...the St Paul', National Library of Scotland NAS 2238/2/5 (1).
