James Fitter (d. 1734), London merchant and mortgagee trading with the English Caribbean, and co-owner alongside the South Sea Co. of a voyage by the Thetis to the Gold Coast and Jamaica in 1726 (for which he is given simply as Fitter). James Fitter was mortgagee of enslaved people and other ‘property’ on St Kitts to secure his advances to Hercules Ayleway of St Kitts c. 1730 and creditor of the Jamaican slave-owner Henry Stout.
