Smith in Slavery, family and gentry capitalism characterised [Hugh] Hall Sr and Jr as 'agents for the city firm of Samuel Betteress and William Allen' and as correspondents of 'the London merchants Samuel Betteress and William Allen' (p. 14). The Chancery suit of Longbotham v Betteress of 1720 included William Allen among the defendants, alongside Joshua Anley, who appears to have succeeded Edmund Longbotham as the captain of the Samuel during its third and final voyage, C 11/732/6.
