P_10433_2038 – Curtis
‘Curtis’ was shown as the owner of a voyage by the Nancy to Africa and Jamaica in 1772 under Thomas Douglass as captain. The common name of the ship makes definitive identification difficult. There are limited grounds for believing this was Timothy Curtis (c. 1743-1804) an East India shipowner and biscuit baker, and his brother Sir William Curtis, the MP and City financier.

Sources: Although Sir William Curtis (1752-1829, http://www.histparl.ac.uk/volume/1790-1820/member/curtis-william-1752-1829) would normally appear too young to have been involved in the 1773 voyage, if the tentative identification of the Nancy with Timothy and William Curtis is correct, he was a full heir under the will of his father Joseph Curtis proved in 1771: for Sir William Curtis as owner of a ship seized for illegal slave-trading in 1822 after abolition, see Killingray https://kentarchaeology.org.uk/sites/default/files/publications/DKslavery.pdf. Joseph Curtis, biscuit baker, the father of Timothy and William Curtis, left shares in the ships James Dawkins, SeaHorse, Nottingham, and the Matthew [sic] among many other assets in his will proved in 1771.
