In his will made and proved in 1731, William Basnett of London merchant left his wife Arabella an annuity of £80 p.a. and his daughter Frances Cropper £150. His residuary heir was his son Nathaniel Basnett whom he instructed to give such security for the annuity to his widow as should be to the satisfaction of John Wright of Bagby in Yorkshire, and John Pemberton and Samuel Ogden of Liverpool. If Nathaniel Basnett was overseas, William Basnett appointed Thomas Smallwood as executor.
