P_10433_2063 – Joshua Oldroyd

D.O.B: D.O.D: 1753

‘Joseph Oldroyd’ appears as co-owner of a slaving voyage from London by the Pretty Betsey to Africa and Barbados in 1737. It seems that this was in fact Joshua Oldroyd (d. 1753), London wine-merchant, who was in litigation with Henry Neale (q.v., a co-owner in the 1737 slaving voyage) in 1741 and Samuel Touchet (q.v.) in 1747, although the will of Joshua Oldroyd made in 1752 and proved in 1753 offers no direct evidence of a connection. He was identified as a wine merchant in the auction catalogue of his household effects sold by his executor in 1753. In 1764 the creditors of Joshua Oldroyd late of Tower Hill London were ‘peremptorily’ summoned to prove their debts pursuant to an order in Chancery.
