P_10433_2280 – George Burton

D.O.B: D.O.D:

London merchant and slave-trader, with seven voyages between 1767 and 1777, probably two more (by the ‘Mary James’ in 1770 and 1771), and possibly a tenth (by the Sally in 1773). He gave evidence in 1777 to the inquiry into West African trade which included a brief exchange on his 1775 slave-voyage of the Jamaica Planter. His later life has not been traced with confidence to date but he was most likely the Capt. George Burton who became a brother of Trinity House c. 1779 and was a creditor of Jamaica estates, with a will proved 1815.
