P_10433_2362 – William Lyttleton
Born: Unknown
Died: Unknown

William Lyttleton (fl. 1778-1798), owner-captain of four slaving voyages from London in 1774-76 and 1784-86, and owner or co-owner of a further 10 slaving voyages from London and one from Dominica between 1788 and 1798. William Littleton ‘Mate’, Gambia appears in the index to the 1789 slave trade enquiry, but the text itself says that he in fact lived there for 11 years as merchant. This man’s later life is elusive given the scale and intensity of his slave-trading in the 1790s. He was probably the man buried at Deptford in 1816 aged 78: no will has been found to date.

Sources: William Littleton 'Mate', Gambia appears in the index to the slave trade enquiry, Vol. 68. Abridgment of the Minutes of the Evidence: Taken Before a Committee of the Whole House..to Consider the Slave Trade (1789) Vol. I p. 56 says that he lived there for 11 years as merchant. Capt. William Lyttleton was conceivably the father of the Tasmanian settler William Thomas Lyttleton (1786-1839). Unsourced genealogical sources online tie the father of William Thomas Lyttleton (1786-1839) to a William Lyttleton d. 1805 (who has not been traced), and his mother as Rebecca Lyttleton. A Rebecca Lyttleton was also buried at St Paul Deptford, in 1823 reportedly aged 43, as was William Lyttleton (c. 1738-1816). The ADB entry by C. J. Craig, 'Lyttleton, William Thomas (1786–1839)', Australian Dictionary of Biography, National Centre of Biography, Australian National University, https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/lyttleton-william-thomas-2385/text3143, published first in hardcopy 1967, accessed online 17 January 2023, has no information about William Thomas Lyttleton's parentage but includes the linkages constructed by Lyttleton himself to the Lyttelton family of Hagley Hall in Worcestershire. William and Rebecca Lyttleton baptised a child, Robert Westcote Lyttleton, at St Dunstan and All Saints Stepney on 19/04/1792 when the father was described as William Lyttleton of M.E.O.T. merchant. The naming practice of 'Westcote' continued into the family of William Thomas Lyttleton.
