P_10433_2400 – Kender Mason
Kender Mason (c. 1722-1791), London and Caribbean merchant, slave-trader and slave-owner. He recovered from bankruptcy in London in 1746 through his activity in the slave-economy of the West Indies, and re-established himself in England. He was shown as the owner of the 1744 voyage of the Expedition from London to Africa and Barbados, co-owner of the Ellinor or Eleanor in 1757 under letters of marque (when he was shown as of Deane and Mason of Antigua), which ship in the same year had a slaving voyage with the same captain to Antigua, owner of a slaving voyage from London by the Nancy to Bonny and Dominica in 1785 and co-owner of a slaving voyage from London by the Henry to the Gold Coast and Dominica in 1787. He was also very probably the owner of at least six further voyages from London in a tight group between 1765 and 1767. In the late 1760s and early 1770s he was active in slave-factorage at Roseau in Dominica in conjunction with Lovell, Morson & Co.

O'Malley, Final Passages: The Intercolonial Slave Trade of British America, 1619-1807 p. 311 shows 'Kender, Mason [sic] and Co., a British trading house at Roseau' selling 3710 Africans in Dominica and 1,173 in Puerto Rico via Dominica in 1768, and 5,003 captive Africans in Dominica in 1772. The three voyages by the Otter 1765-1767 to Antigua, and the voyages by the Utfield in 1766 to Grenada, the Dispatch in 1766, and the Nancy in 1767 (and the Polly in 1769) are all given simply as 'Mason' in the TASTDB, the Utfield with Philip Enouf and the Dispatch with 'Mason (Sons)'. This latter voyage appears anomalous: Kender Mason's sons were infants.

Will of Kender Mason of [Hatton Street] St Andrew Holborn made 26/07/1786 proved 22/03/1791. Under the will he left what appears to be largely urban property in London and diverse plantations in Montserrat, Antigua, Dominica or elsewhere in the West Indies in trust to be divided between his sons Henry William Mason and Kender Mason [jun.]. Kender Mason the testator said he was possessed of a large personal estate, including a debt of upwards of £40,000 owed to him by his son Henry William Mason and his partners Henry Blundell and Nicholas Masterson, and various other debts in England , Montserrat, Antigua and Dominica and elsewhere in the West Indies. The grant of probate showed that his son and co-heir Henry William Mason had become Henry William Pomeroy.
