P_10433_2526 – William Wright

D.O.B: D.O.D:

William Wright (fl. 1761-69), distiller of Whitefriars.  The tentative hypothesis is that all the seven slaving voyages from London between 1764 and 1767 shown as owned or co-owned by ‘Wright, W’; ‘Wright (Mr)’; ‘Wright Wm’; ‘Wright William’; and ‘Wright’ were the same man, together with a second voyage by the Distiller in 1766.  In aggregate, these voyages represent a significant concentration of investment in the mid-1760s. Three with confidence can be attributed to William Wright, manager and then partner of John Bindley MP (q.v.): the 1776 voyage by the Otley Lads, which combined ‘Binley’ and Wright (Mr) in 1767, and the two voyages in the Distiller, in 1765 with W. Wright as owner and William Smith as owner-captain and in 1766 with no ownership information but William Smith again as captain.  This William Wright was shown as distiller of Whitefriars in 1766 but has not been traced forward with confidence beyond the 1760s. John Bindley was in financial difficulty from 1768, and he and his partner William Wright were made bankrupt in 1769.
