P_10433_2706 – M Burnett
‘M. Burnett’ was the owner of single slaving voyage by the Kingston in 1775 from London to African and Kingston, carrying initially approximately 119 captive Africans. He has not been identified to date. However, this was conceivably ‘Mr Burnett’: a James Burnett was appointed Muster Master and Storekeeper at Kingston and Port Royal in 1770, and was in London in 1774 and 1776.

Sources: ADM 106/1185/244 Description: James Burnett, London. Receipt of warrant to be Storekeeper and Muster Master of Kingston and Port Royal, Jamaica and asks for leave. Date: 1770 Sept 16. ADM 354/189/250 Description: Philip Stephens. Mr. Burnett, the Naval Officer at Jamaica, informs us that he has had an eye operation during his leave in England, though with only partial success. He awaits the return of Baron Wenzal to London next May in order to have his other eye couched and petitions for an extension of his leave. Propose a further leave of absence Date: 1774 Nov 30. ADM 106/1233/140 Description: Mr. Burnett, Park Row, Greenwich. Store and other public accounts have all passed the offices and he has certificates for them but his cash account has not been attended to. This has stopped payment of his wages as Naval Storekeeper of Jamaica. Asks for an order for the payment of any pension and the remaining salary due as he needs relief. Date: 1776 Apr 8. The will of this man of East Greenwich made 23/06/1779 and proved 09/09/1779 [PROB 11/1056/267] is inconclusive. The will of Matthew Burnett proved in 1815 offers no immediate evidence of a link. The possibility of a mis-transcription of Burnell has been considered: however, although John Burnell, Mayor of London, had both a brother and a nephew named Martin Burnell, the brother appears to have been in Yorkshire and the nephew was too young to have been the salve-trader.
