P_10433_2746 – Joseph Hayward

D.O.B: D.O.D: 1739

Joseph Hayward was a co-owner alongside the South Sea Co., David Brahoult [sic] and others in a slaving voyage from London by the Elizabeth to Cape Coast Castle and Jamaica in 1726.  Joseph Hayward and John Davy Breholt (q.v.) were linked in litigation in 1725-27 relating in part to Madeira, alongside Edward Dumaresq, with James Travers as plaintiff.   We have therefore concluded that the slave-trade co-owner was probably Joseph Hayward, who established a wine shipping firm on Madeira in 1715 (later Hayward & Rider and Hayward Miles & Rider), with the East India Co. as a major customer.  The will of Joseph Hayward merchant of Stoke Newington proved 1740 was that of this man: one of his trustees was his ‘dear friend and partner’ William Rider, and he identified their partnerships as Hayward & Rider, Hayward, Miles & Rider and Rider, Chambers and Baker, in which he had put £500 for 1/6th of the capital.
