3.1 million enslaved people trafficked to the British colonies

Robert Heatley (c. 1743-1801) was owner, co-owner or captain-owner of twelve slaving voyages from London between 1783 and 1794, four in partnership with Thomas Sharples (q.v.), two in partnership with Thomas Sharples and John Olderman (q.v.), and two in partnership with John Barnes (q.v.). He had been a trader on the coast of Gambia, possibly as agent for Liverpool slave-traders, prior to or in parallel with his own slave-trading. In 1785 he was active in promoting a scheme to settle convicts from Britain on the Gambia River. He was a witness to the Slavery and Slave Trade Enquiry. An abstract of administration of Robert Heatley of Hackney was proved 20/11/1801.
