‘J. Mills’, owner of three slaving voyages from London by the Backhouse between 1800 and 1804. He has not been further traced to date. The will of William Purdy or Purdie of the Backhouse made in 1800 and proved in 1803 says that he was engaged by ‘Mr Miles’ to go to Africa.  Lloyd”s Register (Shipowners) 1805 shows J. Miles for the Backhouse, although other registers show Mills or J. Mills: Thomas Ramsay, who captained one of ‘J. Mills’ slaving voyages, also sailed for Richard Miles. John Miles of Bishopsgate Street, whose will was proved in 1814, was in partnership with a Richard Miles until 1806, but a connection with Richard Miles later Wynne has not yet been established.
