A Penrith-based landowner (c.1750-1811), Jane Abbott was a co-owner in the slaving voyage of the Duchess of Portland in 1792-3, captained by her niece’s husband Edward Lamb. Departing from London, Lamb and his crew trafficked 99 people from Cape Coast Castle to St. Lucia. In addition to her investment in the slave trade, Abbott and her sister managed lands in Cumbria inherited from their father. She never married.
