P_10433_3000 – James Mather of Birchin Lane
Born: 1738
Died: 19/01/1796

James Mather of Birchin Lane (c. 1738-1796), London merchant, and shipowner in partnership with John Julius Angerstein. The appearance of ‘Js Mather’ and ‘James Mather’ for two clusters of voyages in the 1770s and 1780s has caused confusion but they represent two separate men, James Mather of New Orleans (q.v.) and James Mather of this entry. The two men were intertwined in a prize appeal in 1781 (not yet examined) that might shed light on their relationship. James Mather of Birchin Lane is known to have owned the Hannibal, which made a slaving voyage from London to Bonny and Dominica in 1784, was almost certainly the owner of another slaving voyage from London by the Three Brothers in 1782 and was probably the owner of six further slaving voyages from London between 1782 and 1786.
