There are other possible identifications for 'Abernathy' or 'Abernethy.' It seems unlikely that this was Lord Saltoun of Abernethy, but a John Abernethie and Francis Henderson of Lothbury were bankrupt in 1799, B 3/3 Description: In the matter of John Abernethie and Francis Henderson of Lothbury, London, merchants (dealers and chapmen), bankrupts. Date of commission of bankruptcy: 1799 December 20. A James Abernethy appears in Morris & Cozens, Wapping 1600-1800 (pp. 35 and 141) as owner of the Hermitage Pothouse 1764-1773 and partner with Richard Addison, and is characterised as a merchant of Leadenhall Street: this man appears to have been of an earlier generation.
