P_10433_3089 – Valentine Bowden
Born: Unknown
Died: 1795

Owner-captain of a slaving voyage by the Fortitude in 1787 to Kingston. His will indicates that he had accumulated a material amount of wealth for a ‘mariner’. His trustees David Samuda and David Berlandina were merchants connected with Jamaica, suggesting he might have been primarily a captain in the West India trade.

The will of Valentine Bowden mariner of St Mary Lambeth, Surrey was made 19/08/1795. He left £1900 in 3% consolidated bank annuities in trust (his trustees were David Samuda and David Berlandina both of London) with the interest to be paid to his sister Mary Carter then living with him for life and then to her children (separate from her husband Jacob Carter), and from a sum of money he expected from overseas he left £300 to buy further annuities under the same trust. He left £10 10s to both his trustees for the favours he had received of them, and £10 10s each to two children of Richard Hemmings late of Rotherhithe, shipwright. He made his sister Mary Carter residuary legatee and executrix alongside his two trustees.
