HCA 42/442/656 Description: Manuscript prize appeal No 656, from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Martinique, filed in 1810. Captured ship: Juno (master John Fisher). Nationality: American.
History: a slave ship, laden with 403 enslaved people; taken before July 1807 by the French privateer La Becune (Jerome Boubec commanding), and brought into Martinique (subsequently British).
Appellant: the master, of Philadelphia, American citizen for the ship and for the slaves on board as owner. Respondent: the captor. Manuscript appeal papers, never printed. For process in this appeal, see the minutes in HCA 44/70, ff51-52v.
The 1805 Lloyd's Register (Shipowners) shows an entry for the Juno captained J. Miller built Nwbry owned Stone & Co. sailing Li-Havre; while the entry immediately above is for the Juno captained by Mesishaw owned by Huckleston built Rochester sailing London-NY. In 1806 the Lloyd's Register (Shipowners) again shows an entry for the Juno captained J. Miller built Nwbry owned Stone & Co. sailing Li-Havre, with J. Fisher entered as subscript as master and the captain as owner, sailing Lo-Angola, while the entry immediately above is for the Juno captained by Mesishaw owned by Huckleston built Rochester sailing London-NY.  The 1807 Lloyd's Register (Shipowners) shows the Juno with 'T. Fisher' as master and the owner as Captain, London-Angola (as well as another Juno 'J. Fisher' as master and the owner as Captain, London-Grenada): 'Huckleston' appears as the owner of a Juno sailing Liv-Savanna under Malcolm as captain; while the 1807 Lloyd's Register (Underwriters) shows two entries for a Juno captained by J.Fisher, one sailing London-Angola owned by Huttleson built Amer. and the other London-Grenada owned by the captain built Scrbro'.
