Captain for John Deffell (q.v.) of the slave-ship Rio Nova for three voyages to Jamaica between 1799 and 1803, in the last of which he had an ownership interest. The will of Arthur Appleby master of the Rio Nova in the harbour of Martha Brae was made in 1803 when he was sick, attested in Jamaica 09/01/1806 and proved in London 04/04/1808. His ‘servant’, a nine year old ‘mulatto’ boy named William van Proyar, was baptised in London in 1800.
