P_10433_3261 – Hillman [John Marman?]

D.O.B: D.O.D:

‘Hillman’ was shown as the owner of a slaving voyage from London to Cape Coast Castle by the Sugar Cane in 1796 under John Marman (q.v.), in which the ship was captured by the French after the captive African people had been embarked. No ‘Hillman’ has been identified to date, and this was possibly a mistranscription for John Marman, the master. Lloyd’s Register 1796 shows the Sugar Cane, captain ‘Manning’, with J. Marman added under captain, owners Turn[e]r & Co., Lo-St Vincent, and in 1797 the same details without Marman.  The Sugar Cane made a voyage to Cape Coast Castle and Montevideo in 1795 when the owners were shown as Henry Nantes (q.v.) and ‘Turner’ with John Marman and ‘Musgrave’ as captains.  The will of John Marman master mariner of Sandford Place Stoke Newington, made 30/07/1813, was proved 19/11/1822.
