Captain Thomas Harwood, naval captain, father-in-law of Abraham Wilde (q.v.) and then of John Silke (q.v.), and father of the slave-ship captain John Harwood (d. 1700). Thomas Harwood does not appear in TASTDB but was shown in a Chancery suit of 1707 as co-owner of the Thomas and John, on a voyage reasonably identifiable as no. 21226. Captain Thomas Harwood’s eldest son Thomas Harwood D.D. married the widowed daughter of Abraham Houlditch (q.v.).

Subject: the plaintiffs were owners of the ship Thomas and John, which set out for Old Calibar, Guinea Coast, Africa to pick up a cargo of negroes [slaves]. They were unable to go to Jamaica, West Indies as intended as the season was too late, so they went instead to York River, Virginia, America where, according to the plaintiffs, most of the crew, the defendants, deserted or were dismissed.
