William Bignell

Of Seething Lane, shown as a co-owner of the voyage of the Sandown 1793-94: in 1794 St. Barbe, Green & Bignell were shown as Ship’s Husbands & Insurance-brokers at 33, Seething-lane, and William Bignell as partner of John St Barbe and John Green was a witness in the trial of Thomas Townsend at the Old Bailey in 1804. However, William Bignell the brother-in-law and reportedly partner of John St Barbe died c. 1783: the short and uninformative will of William Bignell of Seething Lane was proved that year, showing his wife as Catherine, while Burke’s Landed Gentry shows Catherine St Barbe marrying first William Bignell Esq, and then James Wilde (this second marriage occurred in 1791). It therefore appears that the slave-trader was a son and successor of William Bignell of Seething Lane (d. 1783). A William Bignell of Great St Helens, broker, was bankrupt in 1810.
