Established in 1817 at Bermondsey by subscription, with hundreds of initial subscribers described as ‘Governors’ after pledging one guinea a year or 10 guineas for life. In 1817 the institution listed by name 92 boys and 72 girls, and 18 young men in the ‘manufactory.’
