Christ’s Hospital

A charity school founded by royal charter in 1553, with the core aim of providing children (boys and girls) of poor backgrounds the chance of a better education. The Hospital was funded through charitable benefaction by City merchants and the rents arising from landed property and London real estate. A second royal charter was granted by Charles II in 1673 which created the Royal Mathematical School on the site of Christ’s Hospital, with the intention of training young boys in mathematics and navigation to further expand England’s commerce and empire.
