St Bartholomew’s Hospital

The origin of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was the priory of St. Bartholomew in Smithfield, founded in the early twelfth century. After the dissolution of the monasteries the hospital was refounded by royal charter in 1546 and its administration was handed to the Corporation of London. Like St. Thomas’s, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital provided freely accessible medical care to the sick poor of London. It was sustained through charitable benefaction by City merchants and rents arising from landed property and London real estate. [MB]
